Fire Dept. releases bee attack 911 call

Posted: Updated:

It was one of the worst bee attacks we've reported in quite some time.  A 64-year-old woman was stung nearly 1,000 times in her own home and her little granddaughter made the call that saved her life.

The Phoenix Fire Department released the 911 call made moments after the attack.  It turns out the victim was wearing a life line device and that's how the 4-year-old was able to get help.

911 operator: And did you speak to her?

Lifeline: Not to her directly..her grandchild is in the home..I guess she is outside yelling "help."

The 911 operator took the information from the Lifeline employee the morning the woman was stung by Africanized killer bees.

The employee went on to explain just how young the hero in this story is.

911 operator: Okay and was this an adult grandchild?

Lifeline: No

911 operator: Okay, so a child is saying that a grandmother is outside yelling for help?

"Um..I saw bees and I heard..."

4-year-old Whitney Chrisman knew her grandmother was in trouble so she did the only thing she knew -- she pushed her lifeline button.

When asked if she pushed the button and what she did next, Whitney replied, "I talked to this thing that talked..I told them I told her that grandma needed help."

Betty was stung in her face and body multiple times. She remains hospitalized.  The good news is she was taken off a ventilator and started the recovery process.

Betty's daughter Cindy Chrisman is grateful Whitney acted so quickly.

Glendale firefighters called the bees aggressive and spent hours spraying them with foam near 59th Avenue and Northern.  The bees came from a home behind Betty's where the resident was apparently a bee keeper.
