Could Maricopa Co. Sheriff Joe Arpaio be in for a tough re-election race this year? It depends on whom you talk to.

According to a poll commissioned by one of his rivals, Paul Penzone, Arpaio is up by only 6 points.

44 percent Arpaio, 38 percent Penzone and 8 percent for Mike Stauffer.

Todd McFarlane spends his time designing action figures -- from sports to rock and roll, toys, movies and more.  On Thursday, this famous valley artist took a break and joined his wife Wanda to endorse Penzone for Sheriff.

For McFarlane, it's simply time for Sheriff Joe to move on.

"I deal and talk with people nationally and they roll their eyes when you say you are from Arizona." he said.  "They understand there are some odd things that are happening here."

Penzone, who used to be in charge of Silent Witness, feels momentum is on his side.

"The commercials on every two minutes, the billboards they are trying to put on top of my own are a strong indication no matter how they say the polls don't concern them, it is no longer him trying to win on pink underwear like he would like to state.  Now he is spending money trying to keep his office," said Penzone.

What does Sheriff Joe have to say about this poll?  He declined an interview, but he did make available a campaign spokesman.

"You know, Penzone is trying to get attention.  He is trying to make it look like it is a winnable race for him.  He either knows it is not or his handlers are lying to him," said Chad Willems.

So what are the real poll numbers?

The Arpaio campaign declined to go into that, but said they would publish them soon.

The Arpaio campaign has a lot more money than Penzone's campaign.  It's using some of it to do emotional ads showing the Sheriff's softer side.

To help make up a little bit of that gap, McFarlane is making a original piece of art for the Penzone campaign and should unveil it later this month.
