Phoenix police say a 16-year-old boy who tried to stop a young man from committing a robbery was shot and killed at a park.

Officer James Holmes says the 18-year-old suspect had committed one armed robbery at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. When he tried to rob another person at Marivue Park near 55th Avenue and Earll Drive about a half-hour later, 16-year-old Andrew Murphy tried to intervene.

Andrew was shot once in the upper body and died at a local hospital.

He had his whole life ahead of him and he died trying to protect his 14-year-old sister.

"The last time I saw my son, I was dropping him off at school," said Andrew's father, Dominic Murphy.

Police say the suspect had a gun pointed at the girl's face.

"My son died so that his sisters could still spend time with my wife and myself," said Dominic.

"He had no problem doing what he thought was right, even if he knew that his buddies were going to talk about him."

Andrew was a Deacon in training for his church and a student at Thunderbird Adventist Acacdemy.  His father says he loved people and wanted to be a doctor.

"The community is what killed my son.  If he had to do it all over again and it meant helping the community, he would do it."

Holmes said Friday that officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect, but are withholding his name while they investigate. He's been booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge, two counts of armed robbery and an aggravated assault charge.
