3-Fins custom made mermaid tails

Darting through mysterious waters, digging up pirates' treasures and dinglehoppers -- the mermaid life is anything but "dry" and thanks to one crafty mom, it's not just for wide eyed redheads anymore.

Monka Nauman, creator of 3-Fins mermaid tails, has a house full of aspiring Ariels.  In fact, she started designing the shimmery tails to appease her three mermaid-crazed daughters.

"After going on vacations, bringing your tails with the girls always had so much attention that you know people wanted to know where you could get it from.  I thought if you're serious, I'll make you one," said Nauman.

Working out of her Vancouver craft room, Monika sells custom made mermaid tails in five different shades and they're no just for little girls.  She says that adults and even little boys are just as eager to slip into her $350 designs.

The mermaid tail has a pretty simple design.  It's just a big piece of Plexiglas cut into the tail shape and inside, there are two scuba fins -- all encased in sparkly spandex.  The hard part is actually getting the spandex on.

It's no wonder Ariel traded her voice for some gams.  Walking with a mermaid tail is a joke.  Now lounging like a mermaid was something I could handle, though my time just sunning was short lived.

Now how do mermaids get this thing to go?

"The girls that have always wanted to be a mermaid..they already have the instinct of swimming like a mermaid in the water," said Naumann.

Thank my lucky star fish, I had the instinct too.  And once I got the groove of that butterfly kick, I was flying; flipping those fins felt freeing, magical and exhausting.

Monika markets her tails as a great workout, and my soar quads could give a testimonial.

3-Fins gets about five to six orders each week, but Monika says she doesn't want her craft to grow into a mass production.  She's just looking to lend a fin to those dreamers stuck on dry land.

"They're writing me..e-mails saying that oh..that they've loved being a mermaid all their lives, this is a dream come true."

Just be careful: It starts wit the tail and the next thing you know, you're brushing your hair with a dinglehopper.

Monika says she hasn't made herself a tail, but she has tried her daughters' tails.
