Children's Hospital Heroes: Hyundai

PHOENIX -

Phoenix Children's Hospital is the third largest children's hospital in the country.  U.S. News and World Report names PCH as one of the best in fighting childhood diseases.

Now the hospital has a new tool to fight children's cancer.

This year, Hyundai on Wheels is giving $57 million to hospitals across the country to fund childhood cancer research.  PCH accepted a $250,000 check from Hyundai to specifically study a rare cancer not many people know about.

Only a handful of cases of this rare cancer are diagnosed every year.

"The kids who beat it are the kids who present early who have a local one or two spots in their body that can be removed...sometimes bone marrow transplant," said Dr. Pooja Hingorani, an attending physician at PCH.

PCH doctors are using the money to evaluate the genome of desmoplastic small round cell tumors.  This is a cancer that Kelly Bennett's son Skylar has.  He was diagnosed with this rare non-Hodgkins Lymphoma before he was 5-years-old.

"It took us almost two months to get a doctor to take us seriously. When he was diagnosed, they acted almost immediately. He was admitted into the hospital within half an hour of diagnosis. In surgery the next day, they acted as fast as humanely possible to make it sure he make it through this challenge," said Kelly.

Skyler is now cancer-free and looking forward to many wonderful things to come in his life.

"At the end of my son's treatment, his doctors told him he's going to live to tell his grandchildren about that and that is the most amazing feeling as a parent that my kid was going to be a parent someday.  You don't think that's going to happen when you're told your child has cancer. You honestly think your child's life is going to be cut short without the hope of those doctors giving you that hope you wouldn't have that," said Kelly.

"My hope is we can put this money to good use. We don't what will come out but we will  try to get as many answers as we can," said Hingorani.

To help raise money for cancer research, City of Hope Hospital is holding a walk, a yoga day and food festival.  The events take place during several different weekends in October and November.
