People would rather spend on phone service than clothes, eating out

Posted: Updated:

It seems like everyone has a cell phone these days, and most of them can't live without it. A new study shows more Americans are cutting back on things like going out to dinner and buying new clothes.

That's because they're spending more money each month to keep their cell phone service.

A phone is no longer just a phone -- think about it. Ten years ago you'd have no problem finding people who could get by without a smartphone in hand, but not anymore. Phones are of critical importance to the masses.

"On a scale of one to ten like a ten, like I can't live without my phone," says Raquel Calderon.

"I'd say an eight at least an eight but probably a 10 if I really needed it. Some days it's seven, some days it's eight," says Michaeljohn Roach.

"On a scale of one to ten I would place it at an eight," says Dave Osterberg.

Would you believe that even the economic recession couldn't separate people from their phones? Since 2007 the average American family has cut out things like eating out, entertainment and clothes to the tune of a combined $315 per year. Cell phones on the other hand eat up $116 more per year -- people can't live without them.

"Talking to family is the most important thing in the world and if they're living somewhere else in the United States or even in the world you couldn't cut that out," says Evan Wolfson.

"You've got internet on your phone, you've got all your friends you can contact and Google of course, it's like having your own computer," says Cameron Trimble.

"Years ago we didn't know about it. Today its everything, you know you leave your house you don't have your phone you're like oh my gosh," says Peter Wolfson.

"Once you have it its indispensable you just can't get along without it, like a garage door opener," says Osterberg.

"People that like to tweet and Facebook a lot, they'd rather tweet than eat, that's ridiculous I wouldn't do that but some people do," says Roach.
