SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

A man was stabbed when he fought back against an intruder in his home early Thursday morning.

Police arrested 62-year-old Michael Garland, who allegedly broke into a family's home and stabbed a man in his 50's when he confronted the intruder.

A husband, wife and their 15-year-old son were woken up when an intruder entered their home through an unlocked back door, police said. The home is near Hayden Road and Via De Ventura.

Officers said the victim confronted Garland and when a struggle started, Garland stabbed the victim multiple times.

Even after being stabbed, the victim, with the help of his son, held onto Garland until police were able to arrive.

The victim's injuries aren't life threatening.

Garland was immediately taken into custody and police said he has an extensive criminal history.
