PHOENIX -

Armed robbers held up a bank in north Phoenix Thursday afternoon. Police say two men went into the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union near 34th Street and Bell about 3 p.m.

One of them demanded money from a teller, while the other jumped over the counter and grabbed some cash.

Officers say one of the men also took money from a female customer.

Outside of the bank, the crooks encountered a bystander who tried to intervene.

"He was armed and actually attempted to confront this suspects and chase after them periodically through the parking lot till he realized that the suspect had a gun. The suspect turned towards the citizen that's when the citizen saw that he had the weapon. He backed off," said Phoenix Police Lt. Tracy Miller.

Detectives believe the same robbers held up a bank at gunpoint last month near 56th Street and Greenway.

The suspects are described as black males in their 20s.  Police say the first suspect is 6 feet tall, 180 - 200 pounds with a dark complexion.  He was wearing a black baseball cap with a white bill and unknown writing on the front and a black or dark blue bandanna was seen over his face.  He was also wearing a black long sleeve shirt and blue pants.

The second suspect is 5' 6" tall and was wearing a dark colored "Cowboys" baseball cap, a tan long sleeve shirt and black pants.

Authorities say the suspects obtained a known quantity of U.S. currency and fled the area.  They ran eastbound over a block wall.
