Five people have been taken to the hospital following a crash on the side of a valley freeway.
According to Tempe Fire Department's Mike Reichling, about 8 p.m., a minivan pulled off to the side of the 202 near Rural, presumably for engine trouble.
A pickup truck behind it stopped to render assistance, and at a high rate of speed, a Nissan passenger car rear-ended the pickup truck. The impact forced the pickup truck to hit the van.
The driver of the Nissan was pinned inside the car and had to be extricated. The driver was in critical condition at last check.
Four other people, including an infant that was in the minivan, were transported.
