Polls: Race for President is tightening

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Four weeks to go before the election and more polls are confirming that the race for President is tightening.

These numbers say it all.  47 to 47 -- that is Gallup's take on the race now.  The landscape is changing fast and both campaigns are trying to take advantage.

Mitt Romney may have had more spring in his step Monday as he spoke to the Virginia Military Institute.  With a revived campaign, he went after what has been President Obama's strong suit in many polls -- foreign policy.  And he spoke about last month's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya and a world that he says is now more dangerous.

"This latest assault cannot be blamed on a reprehensible video insulting Islam, despite the Administration's attempts to convince us of that for so long.  No, as the Administration has finally conceded, these attacks were the deliberate work of terrorists," he said.

The President spent much of his day preaching to the converted at California fundraisers, but it helped to pad his campaign coffers at a critical time.  And echoing recent polls, he reminded his faithful that the race is extremely tight and right around the corner.

"So I need you in this election. the next 29 days, we can't afford to be complacent cannot afford to be cynical. We gotta look back at the progress we made and that should give us confidence."

But that confidence may have been shaken and the Obama team is looking at this week's Vice Presidential debate as a chance to quickly get back on track.

As far as the poll numbers are concerned, the Obama campaign has said they've been running this race all along as if they were five points behind -- their fear is that the numbers could soon confirm that assumption.
