ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- Saturday afternoon, Royal Oak Police say a man tried to kidnap a teenage girl while she was walking and on the phone with her mother.

The 14-year-old had just finished having lunch with her father.  She headed down Woodward to go home, but her father stayed behind to watch the game.

We're told the man asked the teen if she wanted some marijuana and a ride home.  She said no, kept walking and dialed her mother, but before she made it home, the man came back and tried to grab her.  Her mother heard every terrifying second over the phone.

"She screamed to her mom to call 911.  She did a great job protecting herself.  And she struggled.  She was able to get free, and she ran home," said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue.

The girl's mother called police, and as luck would have it, police recognized the description of the car -- a silver Chevy Camaro they'd checked out for being suspicious just moments before.

"It just wasn't parked right.  They thought it was odd and they ran the plate and were actually turning around.  They were going to watch the car to see who came back to it," O'Donohue said.

Police were led on a short chase and the vehicle got away.  The suspect, 24-year-old Derek Wallin (pictured above), was later arrested at his Bloomfield Hills home.

Wallin is now facing charges of felony attempted kidnapping and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
