Resort owner: employees' jobs are in jeopardy if Obama is re-elected

MESA, Ariz. -

"If President Obama wins the election, you could be laid off." That's what thousands of employees were told who work at Westgate Resorts.

One of those resorts is right here in the valley.

Westgate Painted Mountain Country Club is in Mesa off Recker and McKellips.

This email was sent out to thousands, including some employees who live in the valley. Republican or Democrat, everyone we talked to didn't agree with the email.

"It's like saying if you don't vote for Romney there's little chance you're going to have a full time job next year," says Joe Platt.

"I don't think it's a good idea," says Bob Radeka, who owns a timeshare with Westgate.

"Voting is such a personal choice it's nothing an employer should say," says Jackie Radeka.

This controversial email is making national headlines. Westgate resort owner David Siegel told employees if President Obama is re-elected their jobs will be in jeopardy.

"I wanted my employees to be informed as to what the results could be of them voting for the wrong candidate," said Siegel in an interview with our sister station from Westgate's headquarters in Florida.

He says he's not telling employees who to vote for. He just wants them to know what could happen.

"Lost thousands of workers over the past few years, and four more years of the Obama administration means tightening the belt once again. We're not going to fire anybody or lay off anybody as a result of who they vote for," he added.

"I'm not a big fan of what's coming if Obama wins," says Platt, a Republican.

Still, Painted Mountain golfer Joe Platt isn't a big fan of the email either.

"I'm all for letting people vote the way they want to vote. I don't like to have intimidation one way or another," says Platt.

We don't know how many people who work for Westgate in the valley.
