Quints take special plane home to North Carolina

Posted: Updated:

There's nothing better than taking your newborn baby home from the hospital and times that by five: a quintuplet homecoming.

"Ready to go home, ready to go, glad we are going," said Mike Matthews, the quintuplet's Dad.

"I'm really excited, I haven't seen a lot of my family and friends since I left in May," said Carmen Matthews, the quintuplet's Mom.

Carmen and Mike uprooted their lives, moving across the country to Arizona five months ago.

It's all because of Dr. Elliot, an expert in delivering at Banner Desert Hospital.

Their forecast was grim.

"It took us over two years to get here...and more than one doctor told us we shouldn't have kept all five of them...but they are all here and they're all healthy," said Mike Matthews.

Those babies were born Sept. 6 and Lorna, Layton, Carleigh and Eason are doing great.

Little rucker still needs to be under close watch in the NICU, so the Matthews couldn't fly commercial and couldn't drive.

That's when Angel Med Flight stepped in, giving the family a free flight home to Wilmington with two neonatal nurses on board.

"Just to watch and make sure nothing happens, he stays good breathing and he's happy," said Monica Kutchinsky, with Angel Med Flight.

"There's always a sense of hoping everything goes well and feel confident the baby looks great, all 5 of them look great," said Kimberly Allred, with Angel Med Flight. "It is a sense of excitement in getting this family home."

"I mean it's awesome, it's the best gift really. I dont know, I can't really describe it," said Carmen Matthews.

With that they're off, back home to start this new chapter of their life.
