National Guard soldiers compete at N. Arizona base

BELLEMONT, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona Army National Guard installation in northern Arizona is the setting for competitions between Guard soldiers this weekend.

Junior enlisted soldiers are competing at Camp Navajo for the Guard's soldier of the year award while noncommissioned officers are competing for their own award.

The competition includes tasks and drills in physical training, leadership and weapons qualifications. There's also an air-assault mission involving a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter.

Camp Navajo is located near Bellemont between Flagstaff and Williams.

The Guard says participating soldiers are from Anthem, Casa Grande, Chandler, Marana, Mesa, Phoenix, Sahuarita, San Tan Valley, Scottsdale, Sierra Vista, Sun City, Tucson, and Vail.

The soldiers are to fly by helicopter to Camp Navajo from the Papago Park Military Reservation airfield in Phoenix Friday morning.

The competition finishes Sunday.
