Penzone, Carmona defend themselves against negative ads

Posted: Updated:

Political races in Arizona have gotten particularly nasty. Dueling ads have turned up the heat.

Anti-Arpaio ad: "My uncle called it the tickling game but after we played he told me he'd kill me if I told anyone… Mommy told me there were a lot of kids like me that Sheriff Joe didn't help."

Anti-Penzone ad: "Paul Penzone pushed his then-wife against a door injuring her in front of their child."

Paul Penzone is continuing to fire back against Sheriff Joe Arpaio's latest ad, which brings up an altercation between Penzone and his ex wife 9 years ago, where she hit him with a hockey stick and claims he pushed her back.

Penzone was never arrested or charged.

And in the race for Arizona's U.S. Senate seat, Republican Jeff Flake rolled out a campaign ad hammering Democrat Richard Carmona.

Anti-Carmona ad: "There was an angry pounding on the door in the middle of the night. I'm a single mom I feared for my kids and myself, it was Richard Carmona and I was his boss."

Richard Carmona is not wasting any time in defending himself against the accusations in that ad.

The woman making the allegations worked with Carmona when he was U.S. Surgeon General.

He says the accusations are false and are politically motivated.

"As surgeon general I never saw myself as the doctor of the Republican or Democratic party, I was the doctor of the nation. some partisans like Dr. Biattio didn't like that and wanted me to alter reports to mislead the American public to benefit their party's politics. I refused," said Carmona at a press conference Friday.

"Today only proves how small our politics have become when Congressman Flake senses he's in trouble, his first thought was to tear down his opponent rather to come up with a better argument why Arizonans should pick him."

Recent polls have Richard Carmona and Jeff Flake in a dead heat.
