No need for alarm: 'Lakeside Killer' only a movie

TEMPE, Ariz. -

'The Lakeside Killer.' There are dozens of these posters on ASU's Tempe campus -- along with missing persons signs. The signs have raised some concerns with students.

"That's a little weird I'm surprised there's so many missing people on campus," says Justin Naterman, ASU student.

ASU students are reacting to these missing person posters showing up on campus alongside signs apparently seeking a serial killer.

"Why haven't students been notified to actually like look for this person," says Katie Dunphy.

Students haven't been notified because the posters are promoting a local film.

"It's about a young guy investigating the unsolved murder of his girlfriend and he believes it's a serial killer called the Lakeside Killer as in Tempe Town Lake and what he uncovers turns out to be far worse," says filmmaker Bret Thomas.

Bret Thomas created the film. He got the idea for this promotional campaign because his central character puts up similar fliers in the movie.

"So he's putting up flyers just trying to get any information about the Lakeside Killer and then while he's putting up the flyers he finds missing person ads which tie into his ultimate goal of finding the killer," says Thomas.

The Tempe Police Department is requesting that officers take down any of the Lakeside Killer signs they see, simply so dispatchers don't get tied up on bogus calls. Thomas makes no apologies for pulling the stunt.

"I think the worst thing that would happen would people would be afraid to go out by themselves at night so they might be a little more cautious if anything."

Thomas has entered the Lakeside Killer for the Phoenix Film Fest and you can actually watch the entire film online.
