A 25-year-old Tucson man has been arrested after an infant suffered severe head trauma while in his care.

Investigators say Tanner Brown was taking care of a 3 1/2-month-old baby boy and his 21-month-old sister while their mother was at work.

Their mother left for work about 6 a.m. Wednesday, and when she came home at 9:20 a.m., Brown told her something was wrong with the baby.

The baby was pale, limp, and unresponsive, and the victim's mother immediately called 911.

Paramedics arrived and evaluated the child, noticing telltale signs the baby had been shaken forcefully -- head trauma and other injuries. The baby was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Brown was arrested on 2 counts of felony child abuse and booked into Pima County Jail.

Medical staff say there was evidence that the child's abuse had been ongoing. The baby girl, who was not hurt, was turned over to Child Protective Services.
