Microsoft debuts new touch-capable Windows 8

Posted: Updated:

Two new products for Microsoft Friday: the new Windows 8 operating system and surface tablet.

Windows 8 is the most dramatic overhaul in the PC world in 17 years.

Microsoft says this new system is their way to bridge the gap between desktop computers and the growing popularity of tablets.

Microsoft's new products is an attempt to cut into Apple's dominance in the tech market.

Apple is enjoying a 24 percent increase in sales thanks to the new iPhone 5.

There's mixed reaction to Windows 8.

"[Windows 8] is a radical change to the operating system so those people who don't want to have a learning curve are going to be resistant to it...but the other thing is, it is going to be fast and light and snappy and all those things should overcome that initial curve," said Colin Gillis, technology analyst with BGC Partners.

iPad users have access to more than 250,000 apps.

We don't know right now how many apps Windows 8 has. It's something Microsoft will need to develop apps fast to stay competitive.

There's a special deal for PC users.

Now through the end of January, if you have Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can download an upgrade to Windows 8 pro for just $40.
