Police: Real Scottsdale rapist arrested

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection to two sexual assaults in Scottsdale.

The announcement comes a day after Scottsdale Police said their initial suspect was exonerated by DNA evidence.

The sex assaults occurred on October 18 and 24. A composite sketch was released to the public last week, upon which a 22-year-old man came forward.

Ryan Festa said he looked similar to the suspect in the sketch, and gave himself up to be investigated -- but he didn't make any admissions.

Festa was released from jail a day and a half later after a judge ruled there was not enough evidence to hold him. DNA evidence gathered at the scenes were later determined not to match Festa's sample.

"It certainly is unusual to have someone turn themselves in and say nothing, and then a week later have the DNA profile say they actually didn't do what they turned themselves in for," said Sgt. Mark Clark Thursday night.

At a press conference Friday night, Sgt. Mark Clark explained how the arrest came about.

"What's transpired in the last 24 hours is our lab personnel and investigators have linked the suspect to both crimes through forensic evidence collected from each incident as well as tips from the community and other investigative methods. Once we positively identified the suspect, a 16-year-old male, he was quickly located by detectives and arrested near his home at the 10,000 block of North Scottsdale Road," said Sgt. Mark Clark.

"We want to stress we're still putting this case together, we have showed photo lineups to witnesses and victims and at least one has picked him out positively identifying him."

Sgt. Clark added that there's a chance he will be charged as an adult, and that he may be responsible for other crimes. His name will be released once he is charged as an adult.

We've also learned this juvenile has a history of criminal activity, but none of his prior offenses were sexual in nature. He's being held at a juvenile facility and is expected to go before a judge in the next 24 hours.
