Run aims to help homeowners battling foreclosure

PEORIA, Ariz. -

The American Dream run took place in a park in Peoria Saturday, but it wasn't your usual run for exercise and competition.

It's goal was to draw attention to the resources available for homeowners who are battling foreclosure or who have gone through other challenges.

It was an unusual concept, combining a run with the housing crisis that crippled the valley, the state, the entire country.

"This is a little outside the box for people. When you're in distress, you don't think, 'I'm going to go for a run.' This is a fun way to get a message out that's not getting to the consumer," said Tina Tamboer-Glatfelter.

The American Dream run at Rio Vista park had educational booths focused on how to keep your home in tough times or help with letting go and moving on.

Foreclosures have touched millions of families and Saturday's event included help for four-legged members as well.

"Our original mission was to rescue pets when they were abandoned in the back of foreclosed homes and that is still what our mission is. But we've started taking pets directly from owners to prevent that from happening," said Jodi Polanski with Lost Our Home Pet Foundation.

Polanski said as the market is recovering they are finding more need for their temporary care pet program.

"It gives pet owners up to 90 days to take their pet back or find another place for their pet to go, it gives them a chance to get back on their feet again and not lose their family member in the meantime," said Polanski.

This is the second year for the American Dream Run in the valley.

As the housing market recovers, those in the real estate business are seeing more people willing to discuss their foreclosure, seek out information and maybe take another run at the American dream.

"The stigma isn't that strong so it's easier to talk about it and get answers and there's a lot of people out there who have really good information," said Krista Goyarts, a runner in the American Dream Run.

National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals said it hopes to sponsor more events like this in the future.
