Candidates in sheriff's race lay low 2 days before election

PHOENIX -

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known as "America's toughest sheriff" is running a tough campaign against challenger and former police officer, Paul Penzone.

Neither candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff campaigned Sunday. Instead, the candidates took care of business and personal matters while talking and worshiping with voters.

The latest polls show Sheriff Arpaio with a 15 percent lead, but nonetheless, both men said they've done everything they can to win.

Arpaio spent the morning addressing a group of veterans at the VA hospital.

There was no campaign agenda here, the sheriff said he was just doing his job.

"I feel I should go to the people directly and let them know what we do," said Arpaio.

Paul Penzone, the man running against Sheriff Arpaio, attended Sunday services in preparation for Tuesday's election.

"I believe that at the end of this race I have to find who I stand for regardless of how hard the sheriff tried to attack me," said Penzone.

Ads against Penzone, a 45-year-old former phoenix police officer, and Arpaio, the 80-year-old five term sheriff, were prevalent during the campaign.

Arpaio claimed donations reached $8.5 million. The race itself has gotten national attention and Arpaio said he has enough support to remain top cop.

"I tell you one thing, if I am rehired, this sheriff will do what he feels is right for the people and I'm not going to back down," said Arpaio.

Not backing down has brought lawsuits against Arpaio, like allegations of civil rights violations against Latinos.

Penzone said that's reason enough for change.

"All the things that we have seen have been more gimmick than execution. We need to be fundamentally sound, it's a very serious job," said Penzone.

Penzone will watch the election results at his headquarters downtown while the Sheriff will join the rest of the Republican party at the Hyatt Regency downtown.
