It's Election Day!: What to bring to the polls

Posted: Updated:

Voters are officially heading to the polls, but there are some things you need to know before you get there.

Polls open 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. To avoid long lines, go at the slower times.

"Your busier times are 6 to 9 in the morning, 11 to 2 and 4 to 7. So if you can pick a time other than that that would be better," says Helen Purcell, Maricopa County Recorder.

Bring a photo ID. If you don't have one, bring two pieces of ID with your name and address, like a utility bill or a bank statement.

If you've filled out a ballot already, you don't need to go to a specific polling place.

"If you have an early ballot you can drop it off at any polling place, doesn't have to be your place, any polling place. You stop by or you can drop it off at any of my locations," says Purcell.

"My earnest wish is that nothing is close, because if you have it close you have the possibility of a recount, so I think that is every election official's hope, that we do not have any race that is close."

Suppose you're registered to vote but have just moved into a new place. You can go to your polling place and fill out a provisional ballot. In the days after the election the county recorder's office will tally it and update your new address.

It's easy to do. There's no reason you can't cast your vote.

Early voting has been underway in Arizona for several weeks, but if you haven't returned your ballot yet, it's too late to mail it.

Voters with early ballots can drop them off at any polling place on Tuesday.

In Maricopa County, more than 1 million early ballots were mailed this year, and so far 700,000 have been returned.
