Jubilant supporters of the president rushed to the White House just as they did in 2008 to celebrate Obama's re-election.
They waved flags and honked horns and chanted "Yes We Can".
A few hours later the president addressed the nation.
Obama spoke in his hometown of Chicago where he thanked Vice President Biden and former President Bill Clinton for all their hard work on the campaign trail.
He pledged to work with leaders of both parties to help the nation continue on the path to recovery.
