A 22-year-old Mesa woman has been arrested for child abuse after one of her children died and another was found extremely dehydrated and malnourished.

On August 25, officers responded to a mobile home where Sierra Pitt resided, on reports that her 2-year-old child was not breathing. That child was pronounced dead.

Another child, a 14-month-old, resided in the home with Pitt. According to court documents, the child was severely underweight and malnourished, had scabies on his head and neck, and bruising on his legs and back.

The temperature inside the home was high due to an air conditioner that wasn't working, and the baby had a temperature of 102.3 degrees.

Pitt admitted she was depressed and "never actually wanted kids." Police say Pitt was actually seeking to give up both children for adoption.

A former roommate of Pitt's told detectives Pitt would leave the children in their playpen for 20 hours a day and that there was often no food in the house. The roommate also said Pitt often drank to excess until she blacked out. Court documents state that empty alcohol bottles were found in the home.

Hospital staff said the 14-month-old was extremely thin and had been medically, physically, and nutritionally neglected for several months. They also said the protrusions on the victim's back were caused by lying on his back for days.

County attorneys will determine whether or not to charge Pitt with the 2-year-old's death pending results of an autopsy report.

Pitt's next court appearance is November 14, 2012.
