3-day breast cancer walk kicks off in Gilbert

GILBERT, Ariz. -

The Susan G Komen Arizona 3-day started Friday. If you live in the east valley you might catch them all walking -- thousands of people walking 60 miles to try to find a cure for breast cancer.

It's a huge commitment -- 3 days, 60 miles, and you have to raise a minimum of $2,300. But they do it because it's a passion.

"Oh we are going to knock breast cancer out, knock it out of the park," says Dr. Sheri Phillips.

The Susan G Komen 3 day kicked off in Gilbert at Crossroads Park. It will end Sunday at Scottsdale stadium.

Over the weekend these men and women will endure blisters, cold weather, sad stories, and meet so many survivors.

"I have lots of friends, lots of family I believe cancer is cancer, whatever we can do, just trying to do my part," says Gloria Ellis.

For Gloria Ellis, this is her 9th time walking. It's not easy, but the volunteers passing out snacks sure do help.

"Well we want to make sure that they have salt and that they have things like bananas, potassium, string cheese and they love peanut butter. Anything with peanut butter flies," says Judy Schaffert.

Every 74 seconds someone in the world dies from breast cancer, and these walkers hope to make a difference.

Most of these men and women will sleep in tents outside and start their walk again early in the morning.
