Mobile home catches on fire while man rakes leaves

GLENDALE, Ariz. -

One minute a Glendale man was raking leaves, the next, his mobile home was on fire.

"That's all I could do, is watch it all go, thinking of all the memories that went up with it," said William Schupbach.

After being treated on scene for smoke inhalation, Schupbach sat, watching Glendale firefighters put out hot spots in his charred mobile home.

"It was quick, I can't believe how quick it was," said Schupbach.

The fire started Sunday afternoon near 67th Avenue and Greenway.

Schupbach says he was cleaning up the yard.

"I was raking the grass, I found a couple lighters laying in the grass I tossed to the side, I continued raking, all of a sudden I see this fire going. I look down and there's another lighter laying there. Evidently, it flashed as I raked across it," said Schupbach.

The homeowner says he went inside to get water to put on the fire but by the time he came out, it was out of control. He called 911.

"Flames were going up probably 8 feet high at least," said Schupbach.

Harold and Carol Bland saw the smoke from their home down the street.

"I walked around, that whole thing was an orange glow and I just watched it take over the whole house," said Harold Bland.

In a matter of minutes, the fire spread from the grass to the carport and then took over the mobile home.

Firefighters say it's a complete loss.

Schupbach inherited the house from his mother in 2004. He wasn't living in the home, but his memories were.

"There are things in there my brother built when he was alive, [I] feel like I've lost a lot," said Schupbach.

The fire department has not determined the cause of the fire.

Schupbach says he was debating on remodeling the home but will now tear it down.
