PHOENIX -

A pedestrian was hit by a car Monday morning on the north side of the Metrocenter Mall near 28th Drive and Peoria.

Phoenix Police say the 67-year-old male pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he was struck about 7:45 a.m.

According to Sgt. Steve Martos, the driver of a black Nissan Altima was headed eastbound on Peoria in the middle lane. He was adjusting his sun visor and ran a red light at 28th Drive, colliding with the victim, Martos said.

Police say the driver remained at the scene and the victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The victim, identified as Frank J. Frassetto, 67, died a short time later.

Authorities say they do not believe the driver was impaired. He was not hurt and was cited for running a red light.

Streets in the area were closed for a couple of hours during the investigation.
