Paton concedes in Arizona congressional race

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Former Republican state lawmaker Jonathan Paton is congratulating Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick on her win in Arizona's 1st Congressional District.

The race was called in Kirkpatrick's favor last week, but Paton held out until Monday.

With more outstanding votes counted, Paton said in a statement that it's clear his campaign came up short. He offered his congratulations and wished Kirkpatrick the best.

The 1st Congressional District, the state's largest, runs from Flagstaff through eastern Arizona counties and then west into parts of Pinal County and includes the Navajo Nation, where Kirkpatrick had strong support.

The race had been considered a tossup and featured millions of dollars in ad spending.

Statement by Paton: "I appreciate everyone's patience as we waited for remaining votes to be counted in our race. It's now clear we have come up short. My sincere congratulations go out to Ann Kirkpatrick, and I wish her all the best in addressing the serious issues facing our country. We are blessed to live in a country where ‘We the People' decide our representation."
