Commuters blast Veterans Day rush hour service on Metro

Posted: Updated:

Bus and rail passengers on Metro are complaining of extremely long morning and evening rush hour commutes this Veterans Day Monday. The official holiday was Sunday, November 11th, but Monday was designated as the federal holiday.

Metro had announced its buses and subway trains would run on a Saturday schedule. It also posted news on its website that track work would result in delays on its Red, Orange and Green lines. However, some passengers said they felt Metro should have run more trains, since many DC area employees do not work for the local or federal government and did not have the day off, but still depended on Metro to get to their jobs.

In a statement, Metro said the transit agency typically sees a 20 to 30 per cent lower ridership on federal holidays. Spokeswoman Carolina Lukas said they still run trains, but on a Saturday schedule. She said the track work being done was necessary and, "unfortunately there were some delays."
