15K people sign petition for AZ to secede from the U.S. - FOX 10 News | fox10phoenix.com

Could Arizona secede from the U.S.?

Posted: Updated:

This may not surprise you, but some Arizona residents want to secede from the United States following the outcome of the Presidential election.

The petition has already kicked off on the White House's web site stating that Arizona wants to withdraw from the nation to create its own government.

It states, "The citizens of the great state of Arizona have the right to stand for their principles. That man is granted unalienable rights, which are not the dispensations of the government, but find their beginnings in God and come from God alone. These are the principles that our forefathers stood for, the principles upon, which our Constitution is based, and those in which we firmly place our belief and resolve."

According to the web site, the creator of the petition is "Nicholas M" of Gilbert, Ariz. and it was posted on November 10th.

The petition has nearly 15,000 signatures and needs 25,000 by December 10th for the White House to consider the issue.

Kate Jones of Gilbert gladly signed the online petition for Arizona to secede from the United States. Obama's win has this mother of two thinking Arizona should just go it alone.

"I think we would do just fine if we made our own sets of rules, that we would be just fine," says Jones.

Former Arizona Attorney General and Romney supporter Grant Woods finds the whole idea of secession nutty.

"They view themselves as patriots and that's unpatriotic, that's not what it's all about. What it's about is you fight for your candidate and work hard and if the candidate loses then you support the candidate who won," says Woods. He says the petition is a waste of time and is divisive.

Even Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who obviously is not happy President Obama was elected to a second term, doesn't support going it alone.

"I believe the states make up the best country in the whole wide world and that's the United States of America. I believe in the United States. So we're not seceding this week, no I don't think so," Brewer says.

Woods says he would rather see people put their energy toward improving the state's education system or something that would make a difference in people's lives.

People in more than 30 other states have apparently made the same request -- to secede from the union.

On November 12, a follow-up petition was started by "Joshua L" of Birmingham, Alabama: "Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America."

It also needs 25,000 signatures for White House consideration.
