Women get feet reshaped to fit in heels

Posted: Updated:

Women are going to extreme measures to get into a pair of pumps. They're taking a little off the top of their toes.

Usually the only thing that comes between a woman and a nice pair of shoes is money. For some though it's a long or fat toe.

So what are women doing? A little nip and tuck off their little piggies.

"That's awful," said Tanya Fenderbosch."That just seems so painful to go through just to wear high heels when there are so many cute other shoes."

According to empowereddoctor.com, cosmetic foot surgery is a big trend.

Susan Deming recently had about a centimeter cut off of her second toe.

"Unless you've been there, and you can't find shoes, and you're in pain, don't judge," Deming said.

She says wearing heels used to give her painful calluses. Now she can't wait to try a pair on.

Austin Regional Clinic Podiatrist, Vikas Godhania says what some doctors are doing is similar to what he does for people with hammer toes.

"There's three bones in the toe," Godhania said pointing to a skeleton. "The ones where they talk about removing portions of the toe usually, the middle falinx. Sometimes they'll take the middle and a portion of the next bone as well."

He only treats people who are in pain, but patients do ask for the procedure for cosmetic reasons.

"We get requests sort of daily," Godhania said.

Godhania says there are severe complications when it comes to altering your toes if you don't need it.

"When you take a straight toe that's long and you shorten it, now there are concerns of that toe being floppy and losing its structural integrity which is a known complication," Godhania said.

The toe trimming surgery costs around $2,000 per toe, or $10 to $20,000 per foot.
