2012 New York City Gridlock Alert Days

As usual around the holidays, New York City has designated several so-called Gridlock Alerts Days. The Department of Transportation encourages people to leave their cars at home and take mass transit to ease the increased congestion and gridlock that historically occurs from the week before Thanksgiving until after New Year's Day.

The city's Holiday Traffic Plan also an embargo on non-emergency construction through the holiday season and right turn restrictions and temporary adjustments to parking regulations at key locations in Midtown Manhattan to reduce congestion.

    A judge allowed a confession tape to be played in court in connection with the case of Etan Patz, who vanished in 1979. On the tape, Pedro Hernandez described how he killed Patz. But his lawyers say Hernandez falsely confessed and doesn't understand his rights. Before Hernandez's videotaped confession was played, Patz's mother quickly left the courtroom unable to watch the video.

NYPD counterterrorism police stood watch outside the Midtown Manhattan meeting where city, state and federal law enforcement officials coordinated their new security plans.

    Chicago, New York and Honolulu are on the short list to host President Barack Obama's future presidential library.The Barack Obama Foundation says four of the 13 applications submitted earlier this year made the cut. New York's Columbia University and the University of Hawaii are being invited to submit more formal proposals to host the library.
