FedEx hub hustling and bustling for the holidays

Posted: Updated:

The holidays are upon us, and chances are you've been busy shopping or making travel plans. This time of year is also a super busy time for businesses helping people send presents all over the world.

We know the post office gets slammed this time of year, but they aren't the only ones. There is a major FedEx hub here in the valley on the west side of town.

This is one of the most happening spots in the valley right now -- the Phoenix hub of FedEx Ground. You might say it gets a little crazy.

But manager Matt Missigman makes sure it's an organized crazy.

He took me on a tour of his plant today, and what an operation.

Packages come in on trucks from all over the country. Big packages are put on big conveyor belts, read by laser scanners, and sent to the right spots.

Smaller packages are sorted by hand, and they even use cool little finger lasers to track them.

Those small packages are then bagged and sent to the right trucks.

This is the company's busiest time of year. We are talking a lot of packages.

"We're averaging about 280 to 300 thousand packages a day... Just a couple weeks ago we were at about 180,000," said Missigman.

And you see some odd things on the conveyor belt, even a tire!

More than 500 workers here make sure everything gets through.

They even let me take stab at sorting some small boxes -- grabbing them off the line, scanning them in, putting them on the right shelves.

"You did okay for your first day -- you just need a little more practice that's it."

Probably a lot more practice. These people know their stuff.

Believe it or not, this place is about to get a lot busier. The heaviest FedEx day of the year is December 10. They will handle 19 million packages nationwide that day.
