Family afflicted with cancer gets mortgage paid for a year

Posted: Updated:

A San Tan Valley family was in great need this holiday season, but they've got some big surprises that will help them get back on their feet.

The Christmas tree is trimmed in tinsel and family pictures. The Murphy's are all about family.

"That's our focus, Christ and our family," says Amber Murphy.

But one member of the family is missing. Dustin Murphy, husband and father, is fighting for his life. The 32-year-old has stage IV colon cancer.

"It doesn't look like it's going to be very much longer, I'm afraid. I give the kids as much quality time with him as I can."

One thing Amber and the kids will not have to worry about is house payments.

The Gradient Gives Back Foundation is paying her mortgage for one year.

"I had no clue! Shocked... I wish I had put more make up on this morning."

The gift came as a surprise. Her husband filled out the forms months ago, and Amber forgot all about it until Monday morning.

She wasn't sure how much longer she would be able to stay in her San Tan Valley home. Now she knows she has a least another year.

It's a relief. Amber will be able to spend more time with her kids. With their father in hospice care, they will need her more than ever.

Every year the Gradient Gives Back Foundation picks two families who are at risk of losing their homes -- paying their mortgage for a year helps them get back on their feet.
