FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A winter storm system that dropped rain and snow across much of Arizona is starting to move east while a second storm is expected Saturday.

The National Weather Service says Flagstaff received more than 3 inches of snow as of 6 a.m. Friday. In Forest Lakes northwest of Payson a foot of snow was on the ground.

The storm brought heavy rain to Phoenix overnight with amounts ranging from a quarter-inch to three-quarters of an inch. Tucson got more than half an inch of rain and snow was still falling on Mount Lemmon at daybreak Friday, with about a foot expected by the end of the day.

Weather service meteorologist Chris Outler says rain and snow will taper off Friday morning but will persist in eastern Arizona until early afternoon.

Flagstaff Unified School District closed schools on Friday in anticipation of heavy snow fall.
