Name released of man fatally shot by Tucson police

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have identified a carjacking suspect who was fatally shot by Tucson police officers last week.

Tucson police say 53-year-old Fernando Velarde-Loureiro was shot and killed Dec. 12 after stealing a man's truck at gunpoint. That led officers on a chase that ended in a midtown neighborhood.

Police say Velarde-Loureiro left the truck in an alley and ran into the front yard of a home.

Officers released a police dog in an effort to protect them after the man brandished a gun.

Police say Velarde-Loureiro refused to comply with orders to put his gun down, prompting four officers to shoot him several times.
