GILBERT, Ariz. -

A man is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a motorist in Gilbert.

Police say 46-year-old Ysidro Cota was taken into custody Sunday night. He's being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and being a prohibited possessor of a firearm.

This happened near Elliot and Gilbert Roads just before 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Gilbert police say 48-year-old Michael Kaftan of Mesa was shot while parked in a downtown cul-de-sac and pronounced dead at the scene.

Kaftan's car sped up and crashed into other vehicles in a parking lot. There was extensive damage to a carport at the scene and two vehicles were on their sides.

The 29-year-old female passenger in Kaftan's car was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  She is expected to survive.

Robert Corona says he doesn't know the suspects, but adds that they live above him in the condominiums in the cul-de-sac.

"I was in my kitchen..heard one gun shot, I looked out the window and saw this guy walk up to his motorcycle and there was a woman on the back of it..he just got on his motorcycle, gave her the gun and they drove off and I heard the car crash into the other one," he said.

Corona says the suspect's gun was large and possibly had a banana clip on it.

Police are still trying to identify the woman on the motorcycle.  Cota was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Authorities say Cota and Kaftan knew each other, but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

According to police, Kaftan was sitting in his car and talking to Cota, who was parked alongside and on his motorcycle. At some point, authorities say Cota fired into Kaftan's vehicle.
