Salvation Army volunteers serve, deliver Christmas meals

Posted: Updated:

Salvation Army volunteers and chefs served Christmas lunch to about 9,200 people on Tuesday.

Doors opened at 9:30 a.m. at Phoenix Convention Center and the Christmas Day community meal was served at 11:30 a.m.

Organizers say they expected around 6,000 people to eat at the center and to deliver around 3,200 meals to the homebound.

Volunteers cooked, decorated and packed to prepare for the annual event.

Not only did everyone get free lunch, every kid and adults received either a toy or goodie bag from the "Room of Joy."

Volunteers brought home delivered meals to those who were unable to travel to the convention center.

Over 1,200 volunteers helped make the holiday a success.
