Phoenix church serves Christmas dinner for police officers

Posted: Updated:

They miss Christmas with their families to patrol the streets and make sure our neighborhoods are safe.

Now one valley church is giving back by cooking Christmas dinner for police officers.

"We bring them a great big Christmas dinner for the guys who are stuck there working the holiday," said Senior Pastor Rodger S. Loar.

The congregation at Mountain View Christian Church spent all morning preparing ham, turkey, potatoes and cookies for officers working on Christmas at the Mountain View precinct.

They've been doing it for five years and the first year, Pastor Loar couldn't believe the response.

"We had a whole bunch of officers stop by the following week to say thank you and we had one in particular who said he's been a police officer for 25 years and nobody had ever done anything this lavish for them before."

Even 5-year-old Dagan Kanouff gave up his Christmas morning to help cook the meal.

Tray by tray, they deliver the food to hungry officers.

"It makes us feel good," said Phoenix Police Lt. Stan Hoover.  "There's not a whole lot of places open on Christmas'll be warm food, hot food, lots of cookies."

Loar says, "It's just nice to see that you can make somebody smile and kind of make a difference."

Mountain View Christian Church also bakes cookies for officers on Easter and they make sandwiches for them on July 4th.  All of the food is donated by church members.
