Two men charged in separate police-involved shootings

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two men accused of attempting to attack Chicago police during separate incidents this week -- one with his car, the other with a handgun -- have been charged for their alleged aggressions.

Sergio Hawkins, 27, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, as well as weapons charges and a slew of traffic offenses after he allegedly tried to run over police during a Christmas Day traffic stop on the South Side, police said. Hawkins, of the 4400 block of South Princeton Avenue,is being held on $100,000 bond.

Darrell Davis, 22, is charged with aggravated assault of an officer with a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a gun by a felon after he allegedly raised a handgun toward police during a Wednesday night foot chase in Englewood, police said. He is being held on $150,000 bond.

In both instances -- which occurred less than 24-hours apart -- police shot at the men, though only Davis was struck by the gunfire. Officers were not hurt in either case, police said.

About 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Davis was running from police through a gangway near his home, when he was shot at least once after turning toward officers with a gun in his hand, a police union official said at the time.

Not long before the shooting, police say they were called to Davis' home, in the 6700 block of South Wolcott Avenue, because Davis and his stepfather were embroiled in an argument.

Officers had left the home, believing the argument was resolved, only to be called back minutes later after the stepfather reported that his stepson pulled a gun on him, the union official said.

When officers arrived, Davis took off running out the back door and officers gave chase, tracking him to the gangway where the shooting occurred, police said at the time.

Several hours earlier, about 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, in the New City neighborhood, police say they pulled over Hawkins during a traffic stop near 4600 South Normal Avenue.

During that stop Hawkins, who was armed with a gun, attempted to run at least one officer over, police said at the time.

Officers fired shots at the vehicle in return, though no one was injured, including officers, police said.

Both men have upcoming court appearances on Jan. 2.
