ATLANTA -

A huge crane buckled and broke while taking down the Macy's Christmas Great Tree in Buckhead from the roof on Wednesday. The 14,000-pound tree was left dangling off of the Lenox Square store.

Melissa Goff with Macy's says the tree fell into the roof of the Men's Store building before the store opened, causing some damage.

Goff said that employees or customers were injured.

The entire store was closed until 6 p.m. Black barricades kept shoppers from the men's department, which remained closed.

Crews worked more than 12 hours to remove the 60-foot tree from the building.

Extra crews were brought in to help remove the tree, and a second crane extended a basket to the tree. People in the basket started removing ornaments, but after a short time the basket was lowered.

By 8 p.m., workers had chopped the tree into pieces and removed all the ornaments. They were expected to return on Thursday morning to complete the task.

Goff said that the store is investigating the incident. It's not yet clear what caused the crane to collapse.

When Macy's put the tree up in November, the store said that the tree was a white pine from Mableton.

Last year, the tree snapped while crews were putting it up, and Macy's had to get a second tree for the holidays.

Shoppers said they hoped the tree troubles wouldn't prevent the store from continuing the tradition during the next holiday season.

It was not known when the men's department would reopen.
