Valley soldier watches daughter's birth from Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

A valley soldier serving 8,000 miles away in Afghanistan witnessed his daughter's birth, thanks to the magic of the internet.

When he deployed a few months ago, Christopher Chavez knew he wasn't going to be able to be there, but his family acted fast.

This baby was not going to wait. The whole family rushed to the hospital and luckily they got there and got the computer up and running just in time.

Meet Alice Renee Chavez. The 1-week-old is doing great and so is her mom, who admits it was hard not having her husband there.

"It was a big challenge it was scary and exciting at the same time," says Paige Chavez.

The couple married two years ago. 20-year-old Christopher Chavez is an army intelligence analyst. He left for Afghanistan in November, knowing he would miss the birth of his daughter.

"He wanted to be here for it and he wasn't able to."

And he almost missed the birth -- apparently, Alice was in a hurry.

"It was happening so fast when I got there, there was little time, if any. Christopher was on the phone with me so he was hearing everything. It was so frantic the baby was not waiting," says new grandma Tasha.

Christopher's mom powered up the computer, fired up Skype and from Afghanistan dad was able to watch.

"I have never seen my son cry. And he couldn't even form a sentence. It broke my heart but I was so proud. He was so proud," says Tasha.

"It was a beautiful moment just to share it with him and her, everything, it was just a blessing."

By the time Christopher returns this summer, Alice will be about 6 months old. This is actually Christopher's 2nd tour of duty. His first was in Iraq.
