Security stepped up for big Falcons game

Posted: Updated:

The gates will open at the Georgia a couple of hours prior to the game's 3 p.m. kickoff, but Atlanta Police Officers said their officers and troops will be in place well ahead of that.

Sectors of police officers will be placed on 12-hour shifts this weekend. They'll be backed up by new technology at a secret video command center with personnel checking anything unusual.

"It's not just about criminal activity but when you talk about moving large numbers of people, whether it's a parade, the Peach Drop, a game -- it helps us with traffic control and they have a direct line of communications with the officers on the ground," said Sgt. Greg Lyon of the APD.

Georgia Dome spokesperson Jason Kirksey said that fans should anticipate extra security.

"There are items you can't bring in. No outside food or drinks are allowed in the Georgia Dome," said Kirksey.

Book bags are also not allowed, said Kirksey.
All parking lots controlled by the Georgia Dome are sold out. APD officers said that people should avoid parking in backyards. There are other lots in the area, but they can be pricey, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports.

Officials say that MARTA is a good option for those headed to the area.
