Is Facebook bumming you out?

PHOENIX -

Facebook is supposed to bring us closer together but a new study says it triggers feelings of misery and loneliness.

The Germany study says it's because we compare ourselves with our friends, and if it looks like our friends have a better life, we get envious, frustrated or angry.

Basically, when you see all your friend's lives...the vacation photos, love lives, work success...it can make you jealous.

In fact, researchers say Facebook has become an unprecedented platform for social comparison.

Researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting Facebook and more dissatisfied with their lives.

People who aren't active on their own pages but like to "Facebook stalk" (obsessively looking at other people's pages) were affected the most.

The biggest cause of resentment? Vacation photos.

The second biggest cause of envy? Social interaction.

That's when users compare how many birthday greetings they got to those of their Facebook friends and how many "likes" or comments were made on photos and postings.

People in their mid-30s were most likely to envy family happiness and women were more likely to envy physical attractiveness.

Men were shown to post more self-promotional stuff, to let people know about their accomplishments.
