HILLSIDE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A wheelchair-bound man died early Thursday after a car hit him not far from his home in west suburban Hillside, authorities said.

Neighbors of the man, identified as William Higbee, 63, told police that his brother had died about 12 hours prior to the accident and was distraught, said Hillside Police Chief Joe Lukaszek.

The accident happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday as Higbee tried crossing the intersection of Wolf Road and Washington Avenue, which is down the street from Higbee's home in the 600 block of North Wolf Road, authorities said.

Higbee was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 1:12 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

No citations were issued to the driver of the car, Lukaszek said.

"He was wearing dark clothing, his wheelchair was dark and he was low to the ground," Lukaszek said. "The driver couldn't see him."
