City could get first real snowfall starting Friday

Posted: Updated:

The lake effect snow that dusted the Chicago area Thursday morning was just a preview of a heavier snowfall expected to blanket the area overnight.

Light snow is expected to begin falling early Friday and about an inch of accumulation is expected by sunrise, according to the National Weather Service.

The light snow is expected to continue through Friday afternoon, dropping up to an additional two inches, the weather service said. The temperature is then expected to drop to 9 degrees Friday night.

Following a clear Saturday, another storm is expected to move into the area Sunday night, the weather service said. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to continue through Monday morning.
