A 79-year-old doctor was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for running a pill mill out of his Philadelphia office.
The United States Attorney's Office says Richard Minicozzi was sentenced for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and 17 counts of distribution.
Investigators say he was distributing Vicodin and Xanax and was selling prescriptions for oxycodone out of his office on the 700 block of Morris Street.
The drugs, according to investigators, were ordered from a supplier and then were shipped to his office in small boxes, which were then sold to customers who would pay in cash. The customers had no legitimate need for the drugs and were given them without a physical examination.
Minicozzi was also ordered to three years of supervised release, a $40,000 fine and a $1,800 special assessment, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
