Key Evidence Found During Search In Abduction Case, Sources Say

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

FOX 29 News was there overnight as police descended on a home in the 6200 block of Walton Avenue in Cobbs Creek to execute a search warrant.

Investigators are trying to determine if this is where the 5-year-old girl abducted from her kindergarten classroom three weeks ago may have been held captive.

"They came around midnight," said one neighbor. "They said they had a tip about the little girl."

"It's crazy, knowing that it might be that close to me," said Karen Davidson, who lives right across the street from the home that police searched.

Her 5-year-old son was actually in the same kindergarten class with the victim at Bryant Elementary School.

"Everybody's praying for her. And we're trying to find out what's going on," Davidson said.

Police sources say the break in the case came when the brave 5-year-old victim and her mother returned to the neighbor with detectives on Wednesday.

FOX 29 cameras were rolling as they walked the neighborhood, followed by police. The girl took investigators to an alley behind Walton Avenue and pinpointed the house for detectives.

"I am not in a position to call anyone a suspect. We're just following up on leads, and that's what we're going to continue to do until we find the people responsible for this crime," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told FOX 29.

Sources say police found several key pieces of evidence in the house on Walton, including an exotic bird. The victim told investigators she heard a large bird squawk in the house every time she moved while she was being held captive. Police also took carpeting, a distinctive bag and other evidence from the house to be analyzed for DNA.

"To find out this happened on the block where I was born and raised at , it's kind of sad," said a neighbor across the street," one resident said.

Neighbors who heard about the raid hope an arrest comes soon.

"It's just a matter of finding out who it is, it's horrible," Davidson said.

Police say they also got a tip about the location from a local woman. She gave them the street and the tip about an exotic bird inside, but not the address for the home.

Police questioned three women inside the home, including a 19-year-old girl who worked at an after-school program at a local daycare center the victim attended.

Police sources say none of the three women were cooperative with investigators.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
