Venice wakesurfer rides waves to success

Posted: Updated:

The best surfer on the water is making waves six times over, as in six world championships.

"I'm going for world championship number seven so this year," said Drew Danielo.

The Venice-native is very much a surfer dude in a non-traditional way. He's a star in a sport that's part skiing, part surfing and even part skateboarding.

"It's just kind of all snowballed," he said.

Danielo is doing what he loves, where he loves to live. The sport looks kind of like wakeboarding, but wakesurfing is very different. First, you're not strapped to the board and secondly, you toss the rope.

It's just like at the beach, but the ride is behind a boat so there are no big coastal waves needed for this sport.

"You don't have to wait for a storm or something to make waves," Danielo said.

He's making waves, all right.

"My training is basically getting a couple of buddies together and going down by the lake and having fun," he said.

He's in training for a comeback after back to back wins.

"I blew it in 2012 and I ended up in third place which is disappointing, but at the same time it's good because it motivated me to come back this year and win," he said.

He's working on a new routine for the September championship in Las Vegas.

"A lot of it's just having your buddies in the boat saying try this do that. Or having one trick and you mess up and it turns in to something different," Danielo said.

Back home in Venice, he owns a surf store. He opened Ollie's five years ago. It keeps him on the water, winning, and living a dream.

"Once I am older and I'm done with the riding and competing I can stay in the same industry that's given me so much," he said.
