Music your kids can listen to

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

"Child-friendly" is music to the ears of the Jones family.

"Nowadays, a lot of songs have those underlining messages they are trying to get through," said Gary Jones.

However, mom and dad can't be everywhere.

"I usually listen to music every day on the way to school and on the way back," explained their son Trey.

There's a way for your kids to listen to the latest pop hits without parents cringing over the lyrics.

It's called "KidsBop." The CDs have sold 11 million copies and produced a dozen top ten chart-busting hits.

"I have a 6-year-old son who was a KidsBop kinda fan before he listened to the radio and he would get into the same songs that my wife would listen to. And then you would suddenly realize that they've changed some of the lyrics," said Michael Calta, also known as "Cowhead" on his 102.5 FM radio show.

Scrub down the lyrics and edit out the innuendo. That's the formula for KidsBop.

"It's adult pop songs sung by a group of little kids, which normally sound angelic," Calta said.

KidsBop is much different from anything Cowhead ever played in his DJ days.

"It's safe for the kids, as opposed to driving around with them listening to the radio and hearing a big monster like me saying the wrong thing," he said.

Kids totally replace the pop star. In fact, the next star could be you! Kidz Star USA is an online music competition with all the drama of "American Idol."

Last round, 50,000 kids uploaded videos to enter. The top eight went to Hollywood, and the winner became the new KidsBop Star.

It's a family-friendly sound parents can get behind.

"The fact that they use the kids to sing the songs helps draw the kids in, so it really is a good avenue to give that secular music a clean feel," Jones said.

That's important when you're dealing with a catchy chorus.

"We have to be very careful with what we allow them to listen to, because they do memorize lyrics very quickly," said Dee Jones.
